My name is Stephen Powell. I was born and raised in the great state of Alaska, one of the most amazing places in the world. I was raised in the church but didn't really give my life to Jesus and start living for him until I was fourteen. From the moment I gave my heart to the Lord I had a great desire to serve God and people in full-time ministry. I immediately started serving my local church everyday after school in the youth department. When I was fifteen I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of tongues. By the time I turned 16 I preached my first sermon in the church, and took over leadership of the local christian campus club, where we preached the gospel weekly and led kids to the Lord in our High School.
In my teenage years my walk continued to deepen with the Lord. I remember growing more and more discontent with the lifestyle of my peers, with quote "normal" teenage activities. I can remember in the summer my favorite activity was to build a fire outside my home in the woods of Alaska, and read my bible and books from God's generals deep into the night, the pages lit by the campfire. My two favorite books at that time (besides the book of Acts!!!) were "Apostle of Faith; The Life of Smith Wigglesworth" by Stanley Frodsham (Smith's son-in-law), and "Power in Prayer" by E..M. Bounds. I can remember memorizing hundreds of scriptures as a child, committing them to memory by writing them on 3x5 cards and speaking them out daily. My desire for authentic supernatural Christianity through a deep life of consecration, the word, prayer, and fasting was burning bright in my early years, and the Lord was leading me from glory to glory!
Right when I graduated High School I felt compelled by the Lord to delay making career/college decisions and take five months off to seek him day and night in prayer. It was at this time that I was activated in the gifts of the spirit. I began to be used in the word of knowledge, the gift of faith, the gifts of healings, and the working of miracles. I began to prophesy and I really had no idea what I was doing. It just started to bubble up from within and I felt so moved to say certain things to certain people. It turned out to be the Lord!
During those five months of intimacy with Jesus, laying on the floor day after day and crying out to God, something happened which forever changed my life. Late one night I was up worshiping the king. That night I had spent more than four hours just on my knees bowed in reverence to the Lord. Suddenly I heard the sound of someone walking outside my door. I looked under the threshold and saw no light on. I was wondering who could be walking around in the dark outside my door. My house had old wooden floors that creaked when people walked on them, so you could usually tell where people were in the house at all times!
Eventually my curiosity got the best of me, so I arose from my prayer position and opened the door. The moment I opened it a wave of glory hit me as God's presence poured into the room. I felt both fear and ecstasy. I felt my heart pounding as if it would come right out of my chest. As I fixed my eyes on the darkness which stood before me, an image began to form. I saw what looked like two burning eyes suspended in the air in front of me. Out of the darkness spoke a voice saying, "I have sought you with burning eyes, now that you have me remain mine"! Next the eyes started moving toward me as I walked backwards into the room. Then a man stepped into the light and His name was Yeshua!
The Lord spoke to me about many things that night. He led me through several scriptures in the bible pointing out certain things which helped to explain my individual calling. He brought me to (Ex.3:12) where the Lord said to Moses, “I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” This represented a ministry which the Lord calls "Sign prophets", a ministry which I was given that day.
Toward the end of the encounter the Lord asked me to kneel down as He poured a horn of oil out on my head. To this day I still feel that oil dripping all over my head, my hands, and my body, every time I'm in the presence of God. That was anointing for my ministry that I would one day step into, but it was not that day. Even though I had an anointing for ministry the Lord had a process in mind to build character which I did not expect!
The last thing I saw that day in September of 2004 was the Lord walking away, deep into a barren wilderness. The last words I could hear him saying were, "Come with me into the Wilderness". And with that, so my wilderness began.
That particular wilderness experience lasted about 11 years. During those years, I must confess, I struggled greatly with my faith. Like Joseph I had received a mighty visitation with a mighty word of destiny from the Lord, only to be immediately thrust in the opposite direction by the Lord, seeing my whole life lived in contrary circumstances to my call. Like Joseph, who had a kingly anointing and was sold as a slave, I felt myself slipping into greater hardships of life with no perceivable path into the work that the Lord had called me to.
I soon married a wonderful girl and started a family. I started my adult life off with working construction, building custom homes in Alaska. But soon the housing market would collapse in America, and with no college education and very little expertise in anything, I found myself cleaning toilets for a living, serving at my local church as the janitor.
In the year 2012 an evangelist came through my home church who moved in the prophetic. As I was helping catch people in the prayer lines this man felt led to ask my Senior Pastor about me, recognizing a call for ministry on me. Toward the end of the meetings He called me out and prophesied my ministry to me, and from that day forward my life began to radically shift. I began to come out of the wilderness!
For the next three years I traveled the world on and off, being mentored in revival, evangelism, the prophetic, and itinerant ministry. In the year 2015 my wife and I felt led of the Lord to launch out into full time ministry, and finally, right about the time I turned 30, I was ordained and released by the Lord.
FULL TIME MINISTRY
Now it's been a number of years since I went full time. I've traveled to many nations, seen miracles, signs, and wonders in the name of Jesus. Many have been born again. I've continued to have sovereign visitations from the Lord which have released more mantles and more grace to serve the Lord in these last days! It's been amazing!
I can tell people through my story that the Lord is indeed faithful! As He releases His word of destiny over your life, He will indeed open the right doors and give you favor to step into your call as you keep walking with him. Just do your part. Stay active and serving in the church. Get the necessary training in the natural and in the spirit (don't neglect either). Be a man or woman of the word. Everything you do, every major decision you make,.. have scripture for it and make sure your life is soaked in prayer. As you faithfully walk with Jesus he will lead you into your call just as He did my wife and I. I pray this testimony has been an encouragement and blessing to you!
